Apparently with the trebling of university tuition fees in 2006 it was anticipated that students would get more ‘contact hours’. This hasn’t happened in England (nor, I suspect, anywhere else) and now with a further rise in fees immanent, people are starting to ask what the money is being spent on. Well, we know that some of it is being spent on building ‘hotels on campus’ as a way of improving the ‘student experience’, while at the same time thousands lose their jobs in higher education, a strategy that you would think is pretty inimical to improving the quality of teaching. Still, hopefully students can look forward to a jacuzzi and bidet in their halls of residence, and this will be some consolation.

    In my opinion these choices are reflective of a complete misunderstanding of the “Student Experience”.
